# What are ghost roots?

Ghost roots are intentional contrasting color placed at the root zone so the scalp area, part, crown, fringe, face frame, or hidden root section becomes part of the finished design.

The phrase is not used identically by every stylist. One person may mean a narrow vivid part line; another may mean a broad pale crown, a diffused root melt, or color hidden beneath a surface layer. Describe what should be colored and where it should remain visible rather than relying on the trend name alone.

## Six features that identify the look

1. **Root shade:** The intentional color at or immediately beside the scalp.
2. **Base and lengths:** The color outside the root feature and its relationship to the root shade.
3. **Placement:** The part line, crown, fringe, face frame, side section, halo, or selected rows.
4. **Edge:** Graphic, diffused, melted, feathered, or deliberately irregular.
5. **Visibility:** Permanently exposed or revealed through parting, lifting, curls, or an updo.
6. **Movement:** The way texture and styling turn one colored zone into a stripe, halo, broken curl pattern, or flashing underlayer.

## Placement map

- **Part line:** Visible from above and the front; width and edge are easy to specify.
- **Crown panel:** Covers a broader top section and changes as the hair separates or curls.
- **Fringe or front:** Connects the color to bangs, curtain pieces, or the front hairline.
- **Hidden halo:** Sits beneath the top layer and appears through movement, parting, or an updo.

## Twelve visual examples

### Exposed part-line panel

A platinum-white panel begins at the visible center part, widens through the front crown, and stops before the black lengths take over. The relationship between root zone and lengths is the defining evidence.

### Crown placement on curls

Crimson begins through the crown, but curls divide the colored area into moving sections. The placement remains at the roots; texture changes how its edge and width are perceived.

### Hidden root halo

The black surface layer can cover most of a teal halo when the hair lies flat. Lifting the top layer reveals a continuous colored root zone, so visibility depends on movement rather than a permanent center stripe.

### Side root-panel detail

A close view isolates a hot-pink side section beginning at the scalp beneath black surface hair. This angle is useful for discussing section width rather than the finished front view.

### Narrow part line

A neon-yellow stripe follows the center part without covering the surrounding crown. It shows how limited coverage can still create a strong root-first contrast.

### Fringe roots

Orange-red begins at the front scalp and continues into a split fringe. The color remains visible around the forehead even though the outer crown and side layers stay dark.

### Root-connected face frame

Chartreuse starts at the front roots on both sides of the part and continues into the pieces beside the face. The dark central crown distinguishes it from a complete bright top section.

### Braided root rows

Magenta across the crown is divided by the box-braid parting pattern while the braid lengths remain black. The sectioning geometry controls how the root color repeats across the scalp.

### Exposed root wash

Slicked-back styling reveals a broad neon-yellow section from the front hairline through the upper crown. Its visibility comes from wearing the hair away from the face rather than beneath a covering layer.

### Asymmetric side part

Electric blue follows a side part, creating a wider visible section on one side of the crown. Changing the part would change how balanced the same colored area appears.

### Visibility in an updo

Pulling long black hair upward exposes a broad red root section that loose lengths can partly cover. Root placement should therefore be assessed in the styles the wearer uses regularly.

### Diffused root boundary

A pale-blonde crown softens into burgundy-red lengths through fine warm strands. The edge is less graphic, but the light root zone remains intentional and visually separate from a dark shadow root.

## Identification checklist

- Does intentional color begin at the scalp or immediate root zone?
- Can the colored section be named?
- Is the contrast part of the finished design rather than untreated new growth?
- Does styling change whether the root color is visible?

Then ask what must be lightened, how the shade is expected to fade, and when the placement will stop following the haircut.
